Daedalus Quartet
Acclaim

The refined but passionate Daedalus Quartet gave a riveting performance of Richard Wernick’s String Quartet No. 8, composed last year. This work keeps playing the mildly tiresome game of interrupting seductive sections with scratchily dissonant bursts, but it is eloquent and even moving, particularly strong in its slow movements.

In the second movement, a mournful melody passes through the upper strings over a repeating bass line, and in the finale — a little rustic, with open intervals, like Copland — the cello finally seems to reach a place of peace. The quartet ends, after an angry burst, in calm.
